New/Exploration/Paper: Nicole Aptekar

Aptekar explores 3-dimensionality with stacks of laser-cut paperboard. Her laser-cut sculpture-objects show no evidence of the artist’s hand. First designed as virtual 3D objects in CAD software, and then translated into 2D layers of laser-cut bristol board that the artist stacks, the emphasis is on clean design and perfect, machine-executed manufacture. The effect is a sculpting of space.

Zimoun Solo Exhibition

The kinetic, sonic sculptures of artist Zimoun feature armies of mechanical entities that form worlds both uniform and chaotic. He uses simple mechanical devices such as DC and vibration motors combined with other industrial flotsam—speaker arrays, ventilators, PVC hoses, and metal wire—arranged in seemingly simple patterns. Come visit Gray Area this January for the opening of his first solo exhibition in SF.
