Logreybeam – Perhaps

When you put the needle to the record of Logreybeam’s Perhaps you are immediately transported to an obscure place in European antiquity. You can practically hear the dust vibrating on the old piano strings as Morley strikes the keys. The sullen tone that permeates Perhaps is built around piano, accordion, and various woodwinds often playing in a waltz feel. However, he accompanies a number of the pieces with glockenspiel, cello, voice, acoustic guitar, electric bass, clavinet, and software.
Morley’s note choices and timbral inflection reminisce of a smoke-filled French cafe during the mid-20th century. The subtle production techniques do an excellent job of painting a surreal picture of a very particular environment. Logreybeam illustrates his rich experience with ambient music by ensnaring his listeners with the grave chord changes and solemn harmonies.
While all of the pieces stand out individually, Perhaps is clearly written as a unit to be listened to all the way through. The dynamic of the record is vast, but Morley is patient with his developments. To realize this, the listener must listen to the gradual flux of moods by listening the to the album in a holistic manner; from beginning to end.
